A World Bank team will visit slums in the city on Tuesday to consider them for assistance under the informal slum improvement programme.
Two officials of the World Bank and two from the Union government will be in the city to see the conditions in the slums.
Of the 623 slums in the city, GVMC has identified 288 as critical and prepared estimates for in situ development. The development will focus on areas other than housing, says Municipal Commissioner M.V. Satyanarayana.
The improvement proposals include on-site, off-site requirements as well as social infrastructure totalling Rs.304 crore. The 288 slums cover 50,258 households and a population of 2.18 lakh. Besides Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad, and Guntur are the other cities in the programme.
The on-site infrastructure proposed includes water supply, drainage, roads, streetlights and sewerage costing Rs.248 crore. Off-site requirement to provide them like improving reservoir (source) or constructing trunk mains and sewage treatment plants (STPs) was proposed to be covered under off-site infrastructure, Mr. Satyanarayana told reporters who met him on Monday.
Social infrastructure like pre-school centres, schools, health centres and parks, among others, cost Rs.13.15 crore. Project preparation, community mobilisation and studies are the other components. The improvement in clusters of slums is scheduled to be taken up in five years.
GVMC had earlier taken up infrastructure development under ODA of the UK Government in 251 slums. Besides, EWS housing (33,380 units), VAMBAY housing (7,300 units), JNNURM (15,320 units by GVMC and 9000 by housing corporation) are the other housing schemes taken up in the city.
