Man should rein in increasing comfort levels frittering away precious resources and should strive to aid nature in balancing their use with replenishment, Visakhapatnam Port Trust Chairman M.T. Krishna Babu has said.
Addressing the World Ozone Day celebration organised by The Hindu in association with Essar Foundation (CSR arm of Essar Group) at A.P. Social Welfare Residential School at Adavivaram on Tuesday, he said with increasing population reckless use of natural resources would leave future generations in the lurch.
People should give up the tendency of spending more money for higher comforts and should learn to use the 3Rs -- Reduce, Reuse and Recycle -- he told the large number of enthusiastic students. He hoped in course of time India would have in place per capita energy consumption caps.
Mr. Krishna Babu planted a sapling as a part of ESSAR raising 100 on the school campus.

Mr. Krishna Babu asked them to cultivate the habit of reading a good English newspaper that would improve their general knowledge. The Hindu carries good editorials, analytical articles on economy, polity and focuses on conflicts and international affairs. Besides language abilities to present his views well, one should know how to open a subject, develop it and end it while writing in the civil services, he said.
Chief Operating Officer of Essar K. Bhaktavatsalam said greening had become a habit with them. Also the company used technology that brought down pollution levels.
A .P. Pollution Control Board Environment Engineer K. Ravi Kumar said the very fact that ozone layer and global warming became part of curriculum underlined their importance.
In his welcome address, The Hindu Regional General Manger T.V. Suresh said every year the newspaper was organising several programmes on environment and Ozone Day offered an ideal opportunity to take up plantation. A total of six programmes were being taken up with ESSAR this year and the Ozone Day was the third.
