Even after water is supplied to the city from the Polavaram Left Canal, there is still need for the civic administration to create storage tanks to be able to supply water through the summer months, BJP city president M. Nagendra has said.
With the city growing in population and a large number of industrial and educational establishments coming up, there is a need for the administration to take a long-term view of the drinking water demand and take concrete steps for continuous supply to the city, he said addressing the media along with former SE, Irrigation, Narayana Raju, here on Tuesday.
The city suffered severe drinking water crisis earlier too, and the BJP had then proposed to the government to build summer storage tanks to ensure consistent flow of water throughout the year. The proposals had been ignored, he pointed out.
Rain-fed sources
Water supply to the city is dependent on rain-fed sources such as reservoirs. Even if the Polavaram project is completed, there would be no water supply from the Godavari during summer. A
lot of work has to be done on the Polavaram Left Canal as out of more than 400 components, work is done on hardly 80.
The PLC would have to cross three rivers and the National Highway eight times. Work has not begun on these works.
On the other hand, land required for the proposed summer storage tanks is already with the government. With little effort they can be completed and drinking water supply to the city improved.
The BJP proposed adding 7.73 tmcft storage capacity to the 10 water reservoirs whose existing capacity is 3.15 tmcft.
