The Visakha Police Trophy 2014 Volleyball Tournament, which commenced on December 29 concluded at the Government Junior College ground, Paderu, on Sunday. The final was held to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, which is being celebrated as the National Youth Day. As many as 280 teams from the rural and the Agency areas of the district participated in the tournament.
A large number of people witnessed the day’s matches and the Madagada team from Araku mandal prevailed over A.L. Puram team from K.D. Peta mandal in an absorbing final.
Tribal Welfare Minister P. Balaraju, who was chief guest of the day, appreciated the talent of the Girijan youth in games like archery, kabaddi and volleyball and promised financial support to other Government departments in organising such events in villages. He patted the Visakha District Police and Superintendent of Police Vikram Jeet Duggal in doing community policing in the Agency areas to keep the tribal youth away from anti-social elements.
AssuranceMr. Duggal, while giving details of the work being done by the Visakha Police, assured that more programmes would be taken up in coordination with other departments.
He pointed out that the enthusiasm shown by Girijan youth in the Agency was not found anywhere else.
A.P. Police achieved a great success in making top Maoist leader Gudsa Usendi to surrender, the SP said and also urged the 37 active Maoist cadres of the district to surrender and join the mainstream.
MLA of Araku Valley Siveri Soma appreciated the rural police for encouraging the Girijan youth. ITDA Project Officer Vinay Chand wanted the natural talent of the Girijan youth must be channelised and assured financial assistance to the police and other departments in organising such programmes in Girijan areas.
Additional SP (Administration) D.N. Kishore, Additional SP (operations) A.R. Damodhar, RDO of Paderu Ganapathi Rao, ASP of Narsipatnam Vishal Gunni, ASP of Paderu Fakeerappa Kaginelli, DSP of Chintapalli Ashok Kumar, Paderu Sarpanch Killu Venkataratnam were present.
The Araku team received a cash prize of Rs. 15,000 and a trophy. A.L. Puram team was given Rs. 10,000.
A cultural programme was presented by the local Girijan girls.
