An undertrial escaped from the prison ward in Rajendra Prasad Ward of King George Hospital (KGH) in the early hours of Sunday, where he was undergoing treatment for a liver problem.

The prisoner, G. Sanyasi Rao (30), a native of Anantagiri mandal in Visakhapatnam district, had been in remand in the Central Prison since 2014 on the charge of murdering his father-in-law.

He was shifted to the KGH on March 7 for treatment.

According to Armed Reserve Police Inspector Gandhi, the accused had gone to the bathroom and escaped through the window by cutting one of its rods.

The Prison Ward has a police post manned by four constables and one head constable from the Armed Reserve wing.

At the time of the incident, there were two prisoners undergoing treatment.

The Commissioner of Police Amit Garg said that four special teams were formed to nab the prisoner and the constables on duty would be taken to task.
