Two persons were arrested and stolen cash of Rs.1.65 lakh was recovered from their possession by the Gajuwaka police on Wednesday.

The accused Prasanna Kumar Mahapatro (30) of Odisha, who had studied up to class 10 in Odisha, migrated to the city after his father’s death in 1996. He joined as supervisor in Kandoi Transport Office, Gajuwaka, six years ago. Later, he became addicted to alcohol and gambling, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crimes) S. Varada Raju said.

On March 17 this year, Mahapatro, with the assistance of P. Pedda (29) of Gajuwaka, who was also booked by the Steel Plant police a decade ago in a scrap theft case, gained entry into the transport office late in the night on March 17 and stole Rs.1,66,002 from the iron safe.

On a complaint filed by Sankara Narayana Patnaik, in-charge of the transport firm, the Gajuwaka police registered a case.

The police arrested Mahapatro and recovered Rs.1.55 lakh cash from his possession at Mindi junction in the early hours of Wednesday. Based on his confession, Pedda was arrested at his house at Peda Gantyada and Rs.10,000 was recovered for his possession.
