The Hindu In School and Cello organise handwriting wizard contest

January 24, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 11:19 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

In the technology driven world, when WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, and online conversations are ruling the roost, and where access to any subject is just a click away, not many are giving a serious thought to perfecting the art of handwriting.

Keeping this in view and marking the National Handwriting Day, the city round of The Hindu In School and Cello Handwriting Wizard contest was organised at Prism Degree and PG College on Friday.

Organised jointly by The Hindu In School and Cello, the contest saw more than 800 students participating from 136 schools spread across Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, East Godavari, and Kakinada.

Two categories

The competition was organised for juniors (Classes V to VII) and seniors (Classes VIII to X) at three levels. Besides participating in the contest, students expressed their views on the efforts to be made to bring about a change in society, which were pasted on the Cello Wall. It was a different experience for parents, teachers, and students who made their way to the venue.

‘Make it interesting’

“Nurturing the art of handwriting should not turn out to be a mundane task for the students. Teachers should bring in new methods to make the session as interesting as possible,” says Kanyakumari, social sciences teacher at Adarsh School.

Parents who accompanied their children lauded the efforts made by the organisers.

The Hindu is setting a trend for other schools. The contest will help build the confidence level of the participants and motivates them to lead by example,” says Uma Maheshwar, a parent from Kadiyam.

What’s needed?

Before giving away prizes to the top three winners in both the categories, Andhra University Vice-Chancellor G.S.N. Raju said: “A person’s stability and character can be identified through his or her handwriting. To hone the art, all you need to possess are two important qualities — patience and focus.”

Expert view

According to D.V.S.S. Manikant, certified handwriting analyst who participated as judge, the winners have been selected based on certain parameters such as graphology, visual presentation, and the scientific strokes of the letters. College principal B. Uma Bala and Regional General Manager of The Hindu T.V. Suresh spoke.

The contest will help build the confidence level of the participants.
