Representatives from about 40 RWAs in Zone II of Visakhapatnam have brought to the notice of Municipal Commissioner M. Hari Narayanan various problems they are facing.
Members of as many as 40 associations participated in a meeting organised by AP Federation of Resident Welfare Associations here on Sunday at the initiative taken by the Municipal Commissioner.
Some of the civic issues raised by the RWAs at the meeting included dumping of debris in vacant sites, grabbing of sites earmarked for parks, failure of the underground drainage system, menace of stray cattle, pigs and dogs, water scarcity in certain areas, including parks, overflowing of drains due to silt. Mr. Hari Narayanan assured follow-up action for quick redress of all the issues raised by the RWAs. He suggested that the RWAs, on their part, should take up groundwater recharge by construction of recharge pits in a large number in their colonies in view of the water crisis in the summer. He stressed the importance of 100% coverage of the pits in all houses and apartments of each colony. He also sought the help of RWAs for successful implementation of separation of waste collected at the doorstep of residents, APFERWAS vice-president K.S.R. Murthy said in a press release.

Chief Medical Officer A. Hemanth gave a presentation on the waste separation methods being implemented by GVMC and cleared several doubts raised by the RWA representatives on separation as well as composting of wet and dry waste at the source and the steps taken to address the constraints both at GVMC and at the residents’ end. Co-operation of residents in successful implementation of the scheme was quite important, he said.
The RWAs present at the meeting explained their problems and submitted a list of major issues for each colony. APFERWAS president Uday Shirname, general secretary A.V. Ramana Rao, executive committee members and zonal coordinators and additional commissioner (general) G.V.V.S. Murthy, zone commissioner P. Nallanayya participated in the meeting.
