To create awareness among various sections and involve them in the cleanliness drive to improve its position in the forthcoming Swachh Bharat Survekshan, GVMC is in the process of grading various establishments in the city.

Hotels, hospitals, schools, resident welfare association and market associations are covered under the exercise following the Survekshan guidelines for 2018. The city emerged the third cleanest in the country in the 2017 Survekshan improving its position from the previous fifth rank.

A total of 10 aspects are scrutinised for four rankings from ‘bad’ to ‘very good’ by physical verification by the Public Health staff of GVMC.

Nearly 1500 schools, hotels, hospitals, RWAs and market associations have been covered considering various aspects of cleanliness, according to Chief Medical Officer (Health) of GVMC A. Hemanth.

While the survekshan directed such a survey, the modalities are worked out by GVMC and Water and Sanitation for the Urban Poor Advisory of the USAID, aiding the civic body in its cleanliness and ODF drive.

After physical visits and scrutiny of the cleanliness or the arrangements for compost-making the details collected from the 1500 establishments are being ranked zone-wise. The rankings depend on scores between 75 % and 50 %, it was learnt.

“With the collection of data over, we are assessing and compiling it to decide on the grading,” Dr. Hemanth said. The awards will be given away at a function to be organised in the first week of next month. With the new guidelines laying more emphasis created on utilising on the created infrastructure (that got priority in 2017), the civic authorities are endeavouring to increase public awareness and participation. The weightage for citizen feedback has also been increased from 30 % in 2017 to 35 % in 2018. Workshops and demonstrations have also been carried out for RWAs, bulk waste generators,, the CMO says.
