A case has been registered against P. Chinna Rao, sub-postmaster, Ponduru Sub-Post Office in Srikakulam district, by the Visakhapatnam branch of CBI on Monday for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs.7,280.

According to CBI sources, the wife of the complainant is a postal agent, who collects amounts from various persons under the Mahila Pradhan Kshetriya Bachat Yojna (MPKBY) and deposits the same in the Ponduru Sub-Post Office, with a list for every Rs.10,000 collected by her. As per the scheme she is eligible for a commission of 4 per cent on the total amount collected by her after deduction of tax and service charges.

There are other agents attached to the Ponduru Sub-Post Office engaged in similar work.

It was alleged that in April this year, the wife of the complainant had deposited an amount of Rs.4,87,960 in the accounts of different customers.

The accused allegedly demanded Rs.1,470 as bribe (i.e., Rs.30 for every Rs.10,000 deposited by her). He had also demanded a similar amount from other agents.

On receipt of the complaint, a case was registered and the accused was caught while demanding and accepting the bribe amount of Rs.7,280 from the complainants.
