Over 1000 students from Andhra University and other affiliated colleges sat on a protest near the office of the Divisional Railway Manager on Monday, against the recent changes in the eligibility criteria for the Group D posts in the Railway Recruitment Board.
There was a mild tension and the police had to intervene to pacify the agitators.
Earlier, they took out a protest rally from Dr VS Krishna Library of Andhra University to the DRM office.
According to Srinivas Rao, unemployed youth, the Railways had recently released a notification to recruit about 60,000 Group D posts and there were some discrepancies.
He stated that earlier the basic eligibility criteria was class X pass and now the candidates should have a National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) alongside class X certificate or should have studied and passed the ITI.
Even the maximum age limit has been reduced from 33 years to 31 years, said Ch. Rajesh another youth.
The protestors also complained that the examination fee has been hiked from ₹ 100 to ₹ 500, which is taxing the poor.
