Security agencies thwart ‘attempted hijack'

An Air India-123 plane, hijacked by terrorists from the Visakhapatnam Airport, was rescued after a two-hour battle by the Naval Commandos, here on Wednesday. All the passengers on board are safe.

Relax! It was an anti-hijacking exercise organised by the INS Dega officials to test the alertness of the various security agencies in times of an exigency and the coordination between them.

The Trivandrum – Kolkata flight was hijacked by two terrorists of the Shaitan group from the Visakhapatnam Airport at 2.51 p.m. The Air Traffic Control authorities immediately alerted all the officials concerned. The anti-hijacking exercise was immediately started under the leadership of Commanding Officer of INS Dega N.V.S. Negi.

The hijackers demanded 10 million dollars, food and drinking water. They also sought immediate release of the Jaish Mohammad Group members who were held at various jails. Assistant Commissioner of Police engaged the terrorists in conversation through wireless sets and helped in the arrest of the terrorists.

The hijackers were taken into custody at 4.55 p.m. Officials of the Eastern Command Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Police, Fire Services, Medical and Health Departments
