Road discipline and traffic awareness should be inculcated from a young age to minimise, if not totally rule out accidents, Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry D. Purandeswari opined.
At a meeting, conducted as part of the road safety campaign ‘Arrive Alive’, being organised by the City Police, here on Monday, the Minister said that today’s children would be tomorrow’s motorists who drive motorcycles and cars and it was better to inculcate road sense among them right from their school days.
Ms. Purandeswari recalled that in her school days, she was trained as a traffic guide and had volunteered to do service on the roads. “I had gained experience on road safety at that time,” she said. Commending the efforts made by the City Police for trying to create road safety awareness among the people, she said that it was the duty of all sections to promote safety consciousness among road safety and not the police alone. Expressing concern at the growing number of accidents in the city, Police Commissioner B. Shivadhar Reddy said that efforts were being made to bring down the accident rate. He appealed to all sections to cooperate with the police in the implementation of traffic guidelines.
Earlier, a road safety rally was organised from the Ambedkar statue at LIC junction to Police Stadium via Pen School, Jagadamba junction and Turner’s Choultry.
Ms. Purandeswari gave away prizes to the winners of various competitions organised in connection with the ‘Arrive Alive’ programme.
