Managements of private hospitals, which do not admit road accident victims, are liable for penal action, Collector Pravin Kumar has said.

Addressing medical officers of government hospitals and private hospitals, located along the National Highway in the city, here on Monday, the Collector said the responsibility of treatment road accident victims lies with private hospitals also along with government hospitals.

Those refusing to admit accident victims would be liable for punishment under Section 132 of the Motor Vehicles Act as per the directions of the Supreme Court.

Though some private hospitals had been admitting accident victims, others were declining to admit them as they were medico-legal cases and so on. Road accident deaths were increasing as a result of non-provision of treatment during the ‘golden hour’.

Indian Medical Association district president Subrahmanyam called upon private hospital managements to update their knowledge of legal and medic-legal issues.

DMHO R. Ramesh and Deputy Transport Commissioner S. Venkateswara Rao were present.
