Software technology is no longer the realm of engineers. This election, on the poll day even the men in khaki will become smarter with smart phones, thanks to a special software application.

A special tracking software, designed by Hyderabad-based software firm, Quadrivium, has been loaded into the smart phones of police inspectors and sub-inspectors, across all the 13 districts of Seemandhra, and this software will facilitate the tracking of police personnel and transmission of messages and live pictures from the emergency site at the click of a button.

According to Managing Director of Qadrivium K. Dinesh, the application is based on Java and Web platforms and is designed to work on Android platform. “This has already been tested in the recently held MPTC and ZPTC elections in Ongole and in the general elections at Mahbubnagar and Nalgonda,” he said.

By loading this software, the tracking of a police personnel can be done live on the Google Map. The exact location of the officer and his movement can be tracked and at the end of the day a log file can be downloaded, giving details of his entire movement during the day.

This apart from the site of emergency, an officer can send live pictures and video-streaming to the monitoring cell. “There is no need to download pictures and videos into phone and then transmit. Just focus the camera and the picture or video can be seen by the person at the monitoring cell,” said Mr. Dinesh.

“Apart from tracking and receiving pictures, I can direct an officer to an emergency spot by just dragging the cursor in my computer to the location of the officer and then drag the cursor to the spot of emergency. This will indicate the officer to immediately rush to the spot,” said the Commissioner of Police B. Shivadhar Reddy. “This reduces the time of calling an officer over cell phone or high frequency communication sets,” he said.

Essentially, the entire software is very user-friendly and even a lay person can operate, pointed out Mr. Dinesh.

The software has been loaded into the smart phones of about 150 officers in each district and will be there for the next three to four days, said the MD of Quadrivium to The Hindu .
