Superintendent of Police condemned the Maoists for destroying the road-laying equipment and beating up the contractor at Kudumusara village in Visakha Agency on Thursday night.
In a press release from the District Police Office on Friday, he said about 40 Maoists, led by CPI (Maoist) east division secretary Ganesh were involved in the attack.
The work was taken up by the Government after residents of Kudumusara, Nimmapadu, Toorubongulu and Rallagedda staged a dharna in the past demanding laying of roads, but the Maoists were preventing the Government from providing the facility and it was for the second tim e that the road-laying equipment was destroyed, he said.
The Maoists were blocking all development works in the Agency area as they were afraid that their existence would be doubtful if the lot of Girijans had improved and the locals would not listen to them any more.
Girijans must understand this point and make use of the development works, the SP advised.
Medical facilities
The Maoists were projecting any road being laid by the Visakha Agency was meant for bauxite mining and they were not even honouring the demand of Girijans.
Roads were needed to provide better medical facilities for the Girijans but it was inhuman on the part of Maoists to come in the way of laying roads, the official said.
