Plantation drive at Visakha Valley School

Students plant 50 species of medicinal plants. The entire plantation project was sponsored by Essar Steel.

Visakha Valley School launched the planting of medicinal plants on its sprawling premises here on Sunday. Divisional Railway Manager Anil Kumar and Essar Steel, operations head of local unit K. Bhaktavatsalam participated in the tree plantation programme.

About 50 species of medicinal plants including Vitex Negunda, Amaryllidaceae, Centella Asiatica, Stevia Rebaudiana, Mints, Aloe Vera, Ruta Chalepensis, Cymbopogon and Albizia etc had been planted. The entire 50 species plantation project was sponsored by Essar Steel.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. Anil Kumar lauded the school management for undertaking an innovative programme of medicinal trees plantation and involving the students in it. He assured that the Railways too would participate in the tree plantation programme and contribute to the mass greening project of the district administration. He said that he would consider a suggestion to plant trees in the barren and unused lands of the Railways.

Essar Steel operations head Bhaktavatsalam said that the company monitors trees planted by it and ensure their survival. He said that his company was already involved in the massive greening project of the city and planted about 5,000 trees in the industrial area.

Essar would be fully engaged in the project until 2015 when the 40 lakh tree plantation project would be realised by all the stake holders. He assured all help to the school in its plantation programme. Essar human resources and administrative head D.S. Varma and AP Pollution Control Board official Usmanullah Khan were present.
