With humidity levels soaring high in the coastline of the city, handloom weaves are the most sought-after fabrics.

Considering such a scenario, the comfy feel of the soft hand-woven handlooms is hard to replace with any other textile. Over the years, the yarn has become the best choice for almost all the seasons. The added advantage is the thought that every handloom product bought goes to help the weaver earn a livelihood. And the lovely spread of these ethnic wears in contemporary hues and designs makes one splurge on it.

In view of the festive season, APCO is holding a division-level handloom exhibition with ‘buy one get one free’ offer.

Interestingly, shoppers can pick up any two products of the same value at the exhibition for the price of one. For instance, those who buy a sari worth Rs.500 can either purchase a bedspread or diwan set of the same value. With just 20 per cent of the stocks arrived, the expo is already witnessing good number of footfalls.

“Owing to curfew in Vizianagaram, we could get only limited stocks. We plan to mobilise the remaining 80 per cent shortly,” said APCO senior manager Ch. Appa Rao.

Women were seen buying mercerised Pochampally cotton, Venkatagiri and Uppada silk saris among several other weaves. Surprisingly, men also thronged the venue to check the price of the crisp cotton shirts apart from bedspreads.

The price range is affordable and caters to all income groups. The exhibition is open till Diwali at Cooperative Employees NGO’s Home near Diamond Park between 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

For those who are keen on the fabrics from Tamil Nadu can browse through a wide range of cotton and Kanchi silk saris at the Co-Optex showroom opposite Vaisakhi Jala Udyanavanam. With a lot of neutral shades in contrast borders stacked for the festive season, one can avail up to 30 per cent discount on all fabrics.

The dress material ranges from Rs. 600 to Rs.900, cotton saris cost anywhere between Rs.400 and Rs.4,000 while the Kanchi silk saris vary from Rs.4,000 to Rs.40,000.

Lucky draw

According to P. Meenakesavarao, manager of the showroom, Kanchi cotton, soft silk saris and Sico saris with a combination of silk and cotton weaving appear to be fast moving among all age groups.

There is also a lucky draw where buyers can win a gold coin on every purchase of Rs.2,000 and above. Those who feel that silk saris are expensive can avail monthly instalment scheme ‘kanavu nanavu thittam’. The festive offer that began on September 15 will continue till Sankranti.
