A young physically challenged woman from Mulagada under Gajuwaka Police Station limits, staged a dharna in front of the Collectorate here on Monday along with members of the Vikalangula Hakkula Porata Samiti (VHPS) seeking action against a man who allegedly attacked her more than 10 days ago.

Urikuti Sujata, who can not walk on her own, alleged that one Ganta Rampuri had dragged her on the road and when a complaint was lodged with the police, an FIR was registered but the man was not yet arrested.

She demanded immediate arrest of Rampuri. In a memorandum addressed to the District Collector and submitted to Joint Collector Praveen Kumar, the VHPS demanded arrest of Rampuri and wanted the Collector to intervene and do justice to the victim.

It regretted that the Department for Welfare of Physically Challenged and Woman and child Welfare Department had not bothered about Ms. Sujata.

VHPS district president Ettula Raju wanted the Government to enact a law on the lines of SC and ST Atrocities Prevention Act for physically challenged persons. VHPS wanted the government to sanction Rs.1 lakh as compensation to Ms. Sujata.

Mr. Praveen Kumar after meeting the victim during the grievances day programme, advised her to approach the Commissioner of Police also, Mr. Raju said. Vikalangula Hakkula Porata Samiti later submitted memoranda to the CP, Assistant Director (disabled welfare) and Woman and Child Welfare Department.
