‘Parents trust colleges to make their wards employable’

March 07, 2015 02:48 pm | Updated 02:48 pm IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

Parents trust the colleges to equip their children with all knowledge and skills required to get a gainful employment, however the students emerge from colleges without necessary skills to make them employable.

The most common criticism is that the students graduating from colleges today lack an attitude to learning or working, Director AP State Skill Development Corporation (APSSDC) K Lakshminarayana said addressing the candidates who had assembled at the AU College of Engineering (Autonomous) to participate in off-campus recruitment drive here on Saturday.

With a view to improving the situation, the APSSDC is taking up capacity building of teachers. One such programme was conducted by an American trainer who taught the polytechnic college teachers on teaching English. The trainer would be returning for another programme in July, he explained.

The State Government would soon be entering into a memorandum of understanding with Siemens Corporation for establishment of six Centres of Excellence in different parts of the State. Each of these Centres would have five skill development centres. The centres would offer training in different disciplines and any student attending a course in these centres would be able to ‘hit the road running’ and work in any industry, he explained. The Siemens Centres would be in place in nine to 10 months, he added. All these would start showing results soon, he said.

Noting that 14,500 students had registered for the Job Fair where the companies were planning to recruit some 1000 persons, he asked the candidates not to feel disappointed. Put in extra effort to acquire skills. Acquire good reading habits and develop competencies, he advised students.

Develop an attitude of learning and relevant skills, Vice Chancellor of Andhra University G S N Raju, chief guest at the inaugural function, said.

AU Registrar V Umamaheswara Rao, Principal AU College of Engineering (Autonomous) Ch Ramachandra Murthy, University Placement Officer Yugandar, CEO of Millennium Software Sridhar Reddy were present.

City-based Millennium Software in association with Andhra University organised the two-day Job Fair at the AU College of Engineering on Saturday, Sunday.
