Online registration of motor vehicles has been introduced to minimise delays and eliminate corruption in the issue of registration numbers, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has said.

The online registration of vehicles was introduced for the first time in the country in Visakhapatnam on Tuesday.

The Chief Minister formally launched the programme through videoconference, remotely from Vijayawada.

He interacted with the first customer under the new system, Eswara Sarma, who purchased a car from Varun Maruti showroom at Siripuram.

A beaming Mr. Sarma, a retired headmaster, and his wife Shanta expressed their gratitude to the Chief Minister.

Ms. Shanta said that this was their third car. “The first time when we bought a car, we had to run around the Transport Department before the registration number was delivered after 20 days,” she said. Now, they were assured of getting the number the same day without the need to go to the RTA office.

Transport Commissioner N. Balasubrahmanyam briefed the Chief Minister about the process of uploading the Aadhaar card and other details of the customer at the showroom of the dealer.

Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao, who participated in the launch, spoke of the vision of the Chief Minister to transform the State into ‘Digital AP’ as part of which the Civil Supplies and Registration departments were already computerised.

Mr. Balasubrahmanyam said that the new system would be monitored for the next couple of weeks and measures needed to improve the functioning of the system would be taken.

Online registration was expected to be extended to other parts of the State, after training of automobile dealers, by the end of this month.

On the point raised by the Chief Minister earlier, Mr. Balasubrahmanyam said that the target for bringing all the 83 services offered by the Transport Department online was June 30. After that, applicants would only have to visit the offices of the Transport Department only for getting LLR (Learner’s License), Driving Licence, and Fitness Certificate (FC) for vehicles.

Additional Transport Commissioner P. Srinivasa Rao, Deputy Transport Commissioner S. Venkateswara Rao, Anakapalle RTO AH Khan, and Gajuwaka in- charge RTO M. Butchiraju, Motor Vehicle Inspectors, and a host of officials and non-officials were present.

All the 83 services of the Transport Department will be offered online by June 30
