‘No holistic approach’

April 23, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

The issue of trafficking is not being viewed holistically by the State government and the police. What is being done is a superficial treatment, says Sunita Krishnan of Prajwala.

According to Dr. Sunita, rarely do the police go beyond the raid.

“After a raid, the victims are sent to correction homes and the organisers to remand, and there ends the story. There is hardly any investigation into the root of the problem,” she said.

The police end their job by slapping a case under the Immoral Trafficking Prevention Act on the organisers.

“The punishment is meagre under this section. What needs to be done is to slap stringent sections such as IPC Sections 370, 370A, and relevant sections under illegal confinement, sexual exploitation, and kidnapping. Only then will there be some kind of deterrence on the traffickers,” said Dr. Krishnan.
