New system checks fuel thefts in garbage transport

March 18, 2014 12:01 am | Updated November 16, 2021 08:03 pm IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

The introduction of Vehicle Tracking System using the Global Positioning System (GPS) has resulted in substantial savings to the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) by arresting fuel thefts, according to GVMC Commissioner M.V. Satyanarayana.

The commissioner monitored the working of the system on his computer on Monday. The system was found to have effectively controlled irregularities in the usage of fuel by vehicles transporting garbage from various points in the city to the dumping yard at Kapuluppada on the outskirts of the city.

He said a 50 per cent saving in fuel was observed after the new system was being implemented from November last year. More than 200 vehicles of different types were being used to transport the garbage to the dumping yard. Once the vehicle GPS, fitted to the vehicles, would provide information on the movement of the vehicle on the computer screens at the GVMC Offices. The distance covered by the vehicles and the route taken could be monitored by the officials concerned sitting in their office.

Mr. Satyanarayana said the corporation was using modern technology to improve its performance. These include introduction of biometric attendance at GVMC Schools and biometric muster of sanitation workers.
