Upper gastro-intestinal endoscopy, harmonic scalpel and laparoscopic equipment, all worth Rs. 50 lakh were commissioned by Director of Medical Education G. Shanta Rao at the Department of Surgery of King George Hospital here on Monday.
Major surgeries of cancer in oesophagus and other organs could be performed with pin point precision with the harmonic scalpel which also results in less blood loss and has other advantages like early recovery, Dr. Shatna Rao said. Another Rs. 25 lakh worth laparoscopy equipment was also received and would be put into use soon. Superintendent of KGH M. Madhusudhana Babu, Principal of AMC N. Kalpana Subrahmanyam, HoD of Surgery N. Subba Rao and others were present. The DME said procurement of equipment was not a problem as the State and Central governments were providing adequate funds, but their proper utilisation and maintenance were important. Superintendents and principals were asked to place on the website the equipment and facilities available with their respective hospitals and medical colleges so that people would come to know of the facilities in the Government hospitals.
