Terming the epic Maha Bharatam as a great and matchless work of universal appeal on myriad counts, speakers elucidated its varied aspects and their contemporary relevance in glowing terms. The occasion was ‘Telugu Bharatam -- Veyyella Pandaga’ at Kalabhrati on Monday evening.
Sri Kopparapu Kavula Kala Peetam organised the literary programme as a part of birth anniversary celebrations of legendary Kopparapu Kavulu, who pioneered the Avadhanam, a distinct genre in the realm of Telugu letters in previous century.
Grand epic
Speaking on the occasion Chairman of the Visakhapatnam Port Trust Ajey Kallam said that the Bharatam epitomised the Indian culture and its study would make one wiser on several counts in life. Masterly translation of the Bharatam into Telugu by the trinity of Nannaya, Tikkana and Yerrapragada was our proud legacy, he added. Commissioner of Police J. Purnachandra Rao said that the Maha Bharatam served as guiding star to our society in mundane and spiritual matters prior to the advent of modern state and its administration.
Renowned scholar Salaka Raghunadha Sarma and director, Annamacharya Project of TTD, Medasani Mohan elaborated the greatness of Maha Bharatam as an epic and as a shining star of matchless beauty in the firmament of world literature. Former Rector of Andhra University Prof A. Prasanna Kumar, who is chief patron of the Visakha Music Academy and philanthropist S. Vijaya Kumar spoke. Founder of the Peetham Maa Sarma and vocalist Alamuru Radha Kumari rendered verses of Kopparapu Kavulu set to music.
