Development is the new mantra and the fact that it has taken root is clear from the victory of both persons who have chanted the development mantra at Centre and in the State, Jana Vignana Vedika State general secretary N. Sankarayya has said.

The focus on development is laudable, however, what is of concern is the definition of development among the common person. Today, people look at being able to wear smart clothes and buying latest gadgets as development. The lopsided notion of development that has taken root among the general populace has made them equate sending children to corporate schools and colleges paying the exorbitantly high fee, paying a high price for treatment at corporate hospitals and spending lavishly on family rituals and events, among others as indicators of development, Sankarayya said.

Addressing the annual conference of Visakhapatnam centre of Jana Vignana Vedika here on Sunday, he said there was a need to define the parameters of development and sensitise people on that. JVV, as a movement, stood for truth and democratic values and should work to wean away people from false values like social status and wasteful expenditure.

The State-level conference of the JVV scheduled to be held in Ongole on July 12, 13 and 14 would discuss threadbare the indicators of development and also review the performance of the JVV with regard to its tasks of popularising science and inculcating scientific temperament among people.
