Jaggery prices soar on free hamper demand

January 10, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:34 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

With the demand-supply gap for jaggery widening in view of the State government procuring huge stock for the ‘Chandranna Sankranti Kanuka’, the prices shot up by Rs.400 to Rs.500 per quintal at the jaggery market at Anakapalle.

The government will distribute gift hampers containing half-a kg jaggery packet apart from five other commodities to white ration card holders in the State ahead of Sankranti, called Pedda Panduga. The government has reportedly called for tenders for 650 truck-loads of jaggery from Mandya in Karnataka and Sholapur and Sangli in Maharashtra and Anakapalle, say market sources.

“Around 6,000 tonnes of jaggery has been purchased from the Anakapalle market during the past four to five days,” says Korukonda Butchi Raju of the Immidisetti Ramakrishnaiah & Sons at the NTR Market Yard in Anakapalle.
