Hit-and-run case takes a political turn

Dadi alleges efforts to protect the accused; CP hopes for a breakthrough in a day or two

May 28, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:52 am IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

The alleged hit-and-run case in which one Moturu Lavanya (29) a housewife was killed on Sunday, took a new turn with former minister Dadi Veerabhadra Rao holding a press meet on Friday at Anakapalle and demanding the immediate suspension of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant Police Station (Traffic) Inspector Krishna and transferring the case to the Parawada (Law and Order) for investigating the case from the homicide angle.

According to him, the inspector in connivance with some local political leaders and the family members of the main accused was shielding the accused Dadi Hemanth Kumar and is trying to dilute the case.

“It is a clear case of eve-teasing that resulted into the brutal murder of Lavanya, and it has to be investigated by the Law and Order team. It has been over six days, and the accused is still at large,” he told The Hindu .

Lavanya along with her husband and one other relative, all residents of Vadlapudi, had gone to the Anakapalle Nukalamma temple on Sunday. On return, the bike in which the three were travelling was hit by a speeding car. While Lavanya died on the spot, the other two escaped with minor injuries. The police had booked a case of hit-and-run. But later, the family members of the deceased claimed that Lavanya was teased by Dadi Hemanth Kumar and four of his friends at the temple, and when she retaliated they nursed a grudge. While the trio were returning home, they were chased by Hemanth and his friends in a car and were purposefully hit from behind near Salavanipalem.

The car sped away after the collision, but the police recovered Hemanth’s badly damaged car on Monday.

He has been absconding since then and his mobile phone is also not reachable. The police have collected the CDR of Hemanth and the CC Tv footage and have begun investigation.

Speaking to The Hindu , Commissioner of Police, T. Yoganand, said, “We have collected some inputs and are investigating the case from all possible angles. We hope to make a breakthrough in a day or two.”

The case is still with the Traffic Department and on the event it is established that there is a motive behind the accident, it will be transferred to the law and order section for further investigation, said a senior police officer.

Petition to State HRC

Samalochana, an NGO of Anakapalle has sent a petition to the AP State Human Rights Commission to intervene in the case. Chakdradhar Buddha of Samalochana sent a petition to Chairman of the State HRC Mr. Justice Nisar Ahmad Kakru requesting him to direct the police to book cases of culpable homicide and under the Nirbhaya Act against the culprits and conduct an impartial enquiry.
