The workers took out a big rally from Kotta Road to Grater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation Office and disrupted work by urging employees to join the protest.

GVMC Public Health workers and employees went on a day’s token strike on Monday demanding that the agreement on solid waste management with RamkY Enviro Engineers be cancelled and opposing the biometric system of marking attendance.

The strike was in response to the call given by GVMC Employees and Workers Union. The workers took out a big rally from Kotta Road to Grater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation Office and disrupted work by urging employees to join the protest.

They staged a dharna at the GVMC where a large number of policemen were deployed.

Union president M. Ananda Rao alleged that the agreement with RamkY would cause a big loss to the corporation and it would stand to lose Rs.50 crore.

He expressed apprehension that nearly 3,000 workers would lose employment if the agreement was implemented.

He demanded that health insurance cards be issued to the workers as promised by the government. He demanded the cancellation of biometric system of GVMC workers.
