GVMC drivers fall in line

October 11, 2011 12:06 pm | Updated 12:06 pm IST - VISAKHAPATNAM:

Drivers of vehicles in the Public Health wing of Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation fell in line and resumed duties on Monday.

Municipal Commissioner B. Ramanjaneyulu took a serious view of the obstruction of outsourced employees and a police case was booked against four persons for obstructing them.

However, since the problem had been solved union leaders urged the Municipal Commissioner not to press for further action against them.

It was decided that the four would give in writing that they would not indulge in such acts of obstruction of work relating to public health and further action would be dropped.

Mr. Ramanjaneyulu said to arrest the wasteful expenditure on diesel and get better mileage, the tanks of vehicles would be filled up and kilometres noted down.

The drivers will be given coupons for refuelling.

After observing for three months those saving diesel would be given bonus.

The Commissioner held a meeting with union representatives in the morning on the issue of weekly holidays.

It was agreed upon that the permanent sanitation workers would take offs by rotation during the week instead of only on Saturdays and Sundays.

General secretary of the recognised GVMC Staff and Workers Federation Vamana Rao, Venkat Reddy (CITU) and Ananda Rao (AITUC) were present.
