A security guard at an ATM centre was arrested by the Cyber Crime police for stealing an ATM card and fraudulently withdrawing Rs.1.58 lakh.

T. Venkata Rao (42), the accused, who was posted at the State Bank of India ATM centre at Nausena Baugh in the city, befriended a naval employee, Devender Singh, who was staying at Nausena Baugh, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Branch) Mohd. Khan told the media on Wednesday.

Rao used to visit Singh’s home to borrow small amounts of money. He stole Singh’s ATM card from his home during a visit, when he was away sailing on the seas in August this year. On returning home on August 20, Singh realised that the card kept in his civil dress, which he left behind at home, was stolen by someone.

He immediately got the card blocked and went to check the balance and was shocked to find that someone had withdrawn Rs.1,57,676 from ATMs at Dwarakanagar, Venkojipalem and Akkayyapalem between August 11 and 13.

Singh lodged a complaint with the Three Town Police (MVP Zone) on August 23 and it was transferred to the Cyber Crime Investigation Cell (CCIC). Cyber Crime Inspector B.V. Venkateswara Rao and his team investigated the case based on CCTV footage of various ATM centres and arrested the accused on Wednesday.
