In a move to sensitise people on how climate change is taking a toll on environment and its subsequent threat to biodiversity, a group of volunteers have teamed up to flag off a green campaign as part of the World Environment Day to be celebrated on June 5.

Emphasising optimum utilisation of resources, representatives of Green Environment Service Society have rolled out a couple of events on May 31 and June 3.

Announcing this at a poster launch programme here on Wednesday, they said that the campaign was meant to encourage people to conserve water, energy and food along with other resources.

Reducing use of motor vehicles, shifting to alternative energy sources such as solar power, converting kitchen waste into manure for gardening, minimising use of plastic and switching to LED lights were some of the tips shared to protect environment by a team of experts, including Andhra University Professor of Zoology Ch. Manjulatha, social worker Ram Prabhu, Green Environment Service Society president V.V. Sirisha and N. Adithya Madhav of Environmental Film Society.

The events that are lined up for the next few days include drawing and painting competition for those studying from LKG to Intermediate on May 31 at Visakhapatnam Public Library at 3.30 p.m. and presentation of ‘Eco Friend’ awards for those who have contributed to enhancing the green cover post cyclone Hudhud followed by a free screening of theme-based films on the library premises on June 3 at 9 a.m. For further details, contact: 7207835806.
