In view of upcoming smart cities in the country and to develop human resource in the area of sustainable architecture Gitam University launched a new programme in M. Arch in sustainable architecture here on Thursday.
The university is offering this programme with the approval of Council of Architecture (COA) through Gitam School of Architecture from this academic year.
Inaugurating the programme GITAM School of Architecture director K. Mohan said of the 467 architecture institutions only 86 are offering M. Arch programme in the country.
He said sustainable architecture would help the smart cities. He said there are around 800 green buildings so far constructed in India and now government is mandated to follow Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA) norms of green buildings in the country.
Gitam University Vice-Chancellor MS Prasada Rao said 40 percent of carbon dioxide emissions are due to buildings and other construction activities and that can be reduced with sustainable architecture.
Indian Institute of Architecture (IIA) Visakhapatnam centre chairman SLN Sastry stressed the need for research and innovation in the field of architecture.
