Several opposition leaders attributed the success of the one-day general strike on Tuesday to people's anger against spiralling prices of essential commodities and anti-people policies of the UPA Government.
“The abnormal increase in the prices due to future trading and commercialisation of agriculture are subjecting the common man to difficulties. Frequent increase in petroleum products is having a cascading effect,” CPI (M) leader and MLC M.V.S. Sarma said.
CPI leader V.V. Rama Rao said despite “back-stabbing” by some trade union leaders after calling for all-India general strike, the workers responded spontaneously to the strike. “At least now, the government should wake up and take steps to check prices and action against outsourcing,” he said. The strike was total in the banking and insurance sector. As per the call by AIBEA and BEFI, employees abstained from work.
