Two-wheeler riders, irrespective of the capacity, make, and model of the vehicle, will have to wear a helmet from Thursday.
“Wearing a helmet is mandatory, and those who do not comply will be taken to task,” said Commissioner of Police Amit Garg.
“Enforcement will be strict. We will have special teams to monitor it,” he said. According to Mr. Amit Garg, 65 per cent of the fatalities involving motorcycles are due to not wearing a helmet. Keeping this in mind, we are making the wearing of helmet mandatory. “As of now, it is mandatory only for the rider of the vehicle. Soon, even pillion riders will have to wear a helmet,” he said.
Mr. Amit Garg told The Hindu that from Wednesday the RTA and the police would be embarking on a special enforcement drive to check over speeding, over loading, driving without licence, and drunken driving.
This joint exercise is going to be State-wide. It is for the first time that the RTA and the police will be embarking on such a structured operation.
