Minister of State for Commerce and Industry D. Purandeswari has sought exemption of the IT industry from power- cut on par with all other consumer categories.

In a letter to the AP Electricity Regulatory Commission (APERC) Chairman A. Raghotham Rao, she recalled that the Chairmen and Managing Directors of all the four transmission corporations in the State had recommended exempting the IT industry from the statutory power-cuts.

The APERC’ s revised order on restriction and control measures has not included the IT industry on par with all other consumer categories mentioned in para No. 21 of the proceedings from restriction and control measures.

IT sector in the State largely depends upon outsourcing of businesses by overseas companies.

Operational efficiency

Ms. Purandeswari noted that IT companies perform their operations 24/7 to cater to the requirements of different time zones and delivery schedules to overseas customers. Any disruption in their operations due to power-cut not only hampers their operational efficiency but also sends wrong signals to overseas investors.

She appealed to the APERC Chairman to initiate measures to exclude the IT industry from restrictions in the State.
