Earthy shades of bed linen, attractive silk sarees in bright and neutral tones, fine cotton sarees, comfortable kurtis, dupattas, quilts and curtains are stacked for the viewers at Pochampally Ikat Art Mela.
For the first time in the city, the expo is being organised by Pochampally Handloom Park Limited (PHPL). A group of six weavers have come from Pochampally village in Nalgonda district to promote traditional weaves as part of the Indian heritage and culture.
Close to 450 weavers work at PHPL near Kanumukkala village, former chairman of PHPL Chikka Krishna has said.
“We have been getting good response for our weaves in Hyderabad and this is the first time we are exhibiting our fabrics in the city. The idea is to educate buyers to look for silk mark or handloom mark while purchasing Pochampally weaves. It is also important to check the fabric that should be identical on both sides while shopping,” he explained.
Weavers at the expo felt that it was a nice opportunity for them to understand the demands of the city shoppers. “The focus is to provide genuine fabric to the customers directly from the weavers without involvement of middlemen,” says K. Anjayya, one of the weavers.
Satyanarayana, another weaver, feels that exhibitions help in bringing different products to one place, and added, “It also helps us understand the present trend and needs of the buyer, educating us to grow better as a weaver.”
The expo, which was inaugurated by Tollywood actor Neelima ( 3G Love movie fame) will be on till May 10 at Sindhi Bhavan from 10 a.m. to 8.30 p.m.
