An enthralling jugalbandi of the veena and keyboard presented by a duo from Srikakulam on Monday marked Kala Vahini's programme for the World Music Day celebrations.
Young artistes Ch. Ramakrishna and M. Sunil kept the audience spell bound with their fusion of classical and western music. Ramakrishna played Dharmavathi raga, Adithalam on the veena and Sunil played a remix of western tunes on the keyboard.
The programme organised at the Visakha Public Library was a curtain-raiser for the many competitions Kala Vahini is conducting to mark the World Music Day to be celebrated on June 21.
The programme was inaugurated by All India Radio Station programme executive and head V. Venkata Rani.
Later, about 90 participants have turned up to showcase their keyboard skills for the day.
State-level competitions will be held in rendering the Annamayya keerthanas, Thyagaraja kritis, Bhajans and film songs (Hindi and Telugu), Karaoke singing, group singing and lyrics writing and instrumental music. Competitions will also be conducted in dance (Indian classical solo, group, folk, western, cinema and salsa), drawing and painting with music as the theme.
Participants are divided into four groups- sub-juniors (UKG to IV standard), juniors (V to VII), seniors (VIII to X) and super-seniors (above class X).
Contestants from five years to 25 years can participate in 24 categories of music, dance and art groups.
More than 600 participants have registered so far. The competitions will be held at Janasikshana Samsthanam, PRISM College, Prema Samajam Auditorium and Visakha Public Library, president of Kala Vahini S.K. Mohiddin said.
“Around 280 prizes will be distributed to the winners of each category, group wise on June 21 at a function to be held at Kala Bharati,” he said.
