Ensure adequate seed to ryots: Collector

All farmers in the district should receive adequate quantity of seed and fertilizers during the kharif season, Collector S. Solomon Arokia Raj told officials of the Department of Agriculture, while reviewing action plan for the season, here on Tuesday.

Target coverage of different crops in the district during kharif was 1.10 lakh hectares under paddy; 2.03 lakh hectares under normal crops; 40,000 hectares under sugarcane; 25,000 hectares under ragi and 52,400 hectares under other crops. It was estimated that 31,971 quintals of seed were required for different crops and so far 19,500 quintals of paddy, 1000 quintals of groundnut, 100 quintals of green gram, 100 quintals of maize and 40 quintals of black gram seed had been distributed to farmers.

Joint Director (Agriculture) C.N. Sreenivasulu said that proposals were sent to the State Government to provide 84,104 metric tons of urea, DAP and MOP complex fertilizers to the district while 5,500 tonnes of complex fertilizers were available at present.

To encourage organic farming and production of organic manure, 25 vermi compost units at 50 per cent subsidy, 10 vermi hatcheries and 1,229 HDPE woven beds were sanctioned to farmers, he said.
