Commemorating the decisive victory of India over Pakistan in 1971 war that led to the formation of Bangladesh, the Eastern Naval Command on Tuesday paid tributes to the valiant personnel of the armed forces who made the supreme sacrifice in various operations including the 1971 Indo-Pak war.
Floral wreaths were laid at the Victory at Sea War Memorial on the Beach Road by Chief of Staff, Eastern Naval Command, Vice Admiral Bimal Verma. President of Navy Foundation Vice Admiral (retd) V.K. Namballa and Zilla Sainik Welfare Officer Captain (retd) P. Satya Prasad also placed wreaths at the martyrs’ memorial.
A 50-men guard was paraded at the venue and a two-minute silence was observed as a mark of respect to the martyrs.
The Defence Services across the country celebrate Vijay Diwas on December 16th every year to commemorate the historic victory against Pakistan in 1971 war. On this day, the Pakistani forces under the command of Lieutenant General A.A.K. Niazi surrendered at Dhaka in the presence of the three tri-service theatre Commanders of Indian Armed Forces. It was on this day in 1971, that a declaration of cease fire was brought into force ending the Indo-Pak war and resulting in the birth of the sovereign country of Bangladesh.
