Electioneering

Citizens struggling under sweltering heat and long power-cut had to cope with the annoyance of incessant and deafeningly loud propaganda from campaign vehicles of different parties. The ordeal was worse for senior citizens.

There must be some rules on the permissible noise levels for such campaigns.

Informed decision

need of the hour

The judgment of voters is clouded by unrealistic and false promises made by political parties during the election campaign. Further, the contestants also play on factors like caste and creed. The onus lies on the more educated sections of society to ensure that the less educated take an informed decision on whom to vote for.

Vizag is the best bet

The Centre, which pushed through the bifurcation of the State without any scientific approach, has now appointed experts to identify the location for the new capital.

The decision should be left to the new popularly elected government that would come to power in the State. Among all the cities in Andhra Pradesh, Visakhapatnam is the most suited to be the capital city.

Election reforms

The Election Commission should bring in reforms to help citizens vote online and a number of centres could be established for the purpose across the country.

Further, postal ballot should be done away with in view of reports of rampant sale of postal ballots.

Disturbing trend

Not only were people hired to participate in the election campaign but also paid to vote for a political party. While individual voters were paid in hundreds, the opinion leaders in localities were paid in thousands.

All political parties, with the exception of the AAP and the Left parties, indulged in this ‘purchase’ of votes.

This is the land of Mahatma Gandhi!
