Demanding the operation of Purushottapatnam lift scheme as promised to improve water supply to the city and cater to the needs of the industry the BJP city unit organised a protest on Tuesday.

Many parts of the city, including Arilova, Akkayyapalem and Santipuram near NAD were facing scarce water situation, city president M. Nagendra said at a dharna organised at the Gandhi statue near GVMC on Tuesday.

Mr. Nagendra said the State government had assured people that the Purushottapatnam lift scheme would be completed by September 2017 but it was not clear when the scheme would be ready and the city would get water.

He demanded that the scheme be completed at the earliest and domestic and industrial water needs be met.

Mr. Nagendra said with people depending more and more on groundwater ingress of seawater was leading to salinity.

The Raiwada, Tatipudi, Meghadrigedda, Yeleru and Mudasarlova reservoirs and Gambhiram and Gosthani were rain-fed. Because of it only half of the 150 MGD demand is being met.

A memorandum was submitted to Additional Commissioner (Finance) S.S. Varma.

BJP leaders Ratna Kumari and Gajapathi Rao and a number of party workers participated in the protest programme0.
