A five-day Disability Sports Workshop is being organised by The Ability People, Visakhapatnam, in partnership with Choice International, a UK-based international development organisation, from December 12.
Addressing a media conference in connection with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on Tuesday, Director of The Ability People Dilip Patro said that demonstrations, training and taster sessions for disabled people in Wheelchair Basketball, Wheelchair Table Tennis and Boccia (specially designed for those suffering from cerebral palsy and other neurological diseases) during the workshop.
The workshop would be led by experienced disabled sportspersons from India and the UK. The objective was to enable disabled people to experience sports with a view to developing and establishing regular meets. The workshop was one of the several initiatives being undertaken by Choice International as part of its commitment to promote disability equality in India.
Mr. Dilip said that the aim of The Ability People was to highlight the abilities of persons with disabilities through demonstrations of wheelchair basketball, Boccia and wheelchair table tennis and create a sports and games club in Visakhapatnam.
He appealed to people with loco motor/physical disabilities to register free for this sport club.
There would be no discrimination of any kind but individuals should be able to self-propel a manual wheelchair and have limited cognitive disabilities.
Free food and accommodation would be provided for non-locals. Transport would also be arranged for persons suffering from cerebral palsy and other neurological disorders.
The workshop also aims to build a team, which could represent India in international wheelchair sports division of the upcoming Asian Para Games in South Korea next year.
