Marking the end of the Dasara festivities an idol of Goddess Durga was immersed in the sea at Ramakrishna Beach on Sunday, the first one this year in the city.
The remarkable discipline shown by the devotees set the benchmark for all the devotees this year. The personnel and families of Coast Guard set up a rope party to demarcate a safe area on the beach to ensure that nobody ventures into the dangerous sea.
Youth swayed in devotional zeal singing bhajans in praise of the Goddess Durga. Their fervour reached a pitch as the elders performed final pujas to the idol. The devotees then made way for the idol to be carried past the rope. It was amazing to see the sense of discipline in the devotees who stayed within the limits set by the rope party and the police.
The devotees handed over the idol to a group of community guard swimmers who then carried it on the final leg of the journey to the sea and immersed it.
