Sanjeev Gupta, who directed Q, has been selected to receive this year’s Gollapudi Srinivas memorial award for debut director.

The award, which includes a purse of Rs. 1.5 lakh, a ,memento and a shawl, would be presented to Sanjeev Gupta of Agra at a function to be held at the Madras Music Academy, Chennai, on August 12, noted writer and actor Gollapudi Maruthi Rao announced here.

Gollapudi Maruthi Rao instituted the award in memory of his third son Srinivas, who drowned at sea while directing a movie on the beach here 23 years ago.

The award is being presented to a debut director for the best work selected from all over India. Every year, the award is announced on March 17, the birth anniversary of Srinivas, and presented in Chennai on August 12, the day the young director passed away.

Q was selected from among 17 entries from debut directors received this year, Mr. Maruthi Rao said.

“Sanjeev Gupta picked up a current issue to make the film, used only six dialogues, and used visual media for splendid effect. He worked hard for six years to produce Q,” Mr. Maruthi Rao said.
