February 19, 2011 09:06 pm | Updated 09:06 pm IST - VIZIANAGARAM:

A workshop on ‘climate change – impact on natural resources,' organised by the Department of Chemistry in coordination with the A.P. Pollution Control Board, was inaugurated at M.R. College (Autonomous) here on Saturday by Joint Collector H. Arun Kumar.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Arun Kumar, while making it clear that climatic changes would have a negative impact on natural resources and socio-economic systems, suggested that the participants, particularly youth, conserve energy and natural resources by adopting alternative ways for sustainable development. He said solid waste management and judicious use of fuel and energy sources would reduce emission of harmful gases. He said the local administration would soon be emulating the Tenali Municipality in disposal of solid waste.

Executive Engineer of Pollution Control Board K. Ramesh felt that deforestation, haphazard disposal of solid waste and excessive exploitation of natural resources were the cause for climatic changes and laid emphasis on use of renewable energy sources without hindering growth.

Andhra University professors N. Someswara Rao and K. Kameswara Rao, correspondent of MANSAS educational institutions A. Raghava Rao and others spoke. Principal of the college D.R. K. Raju presided.
