‘Concerted effort needed’

“All organisations must come together to control erosion of beaches,” VPT Chairman M.T. Krishna Babu said after inspecting the damaged stretch of Beach Road on Thursday. “Beach nourishment is a short-term and immediate measure, but long-term measures are needed along a long stretch,” Mr. Krishna Babu said.

He cited the example of groins built on the stretch of Chennai beach to Ennore power plant, but felt that this might not be possible here since the long beaches of the city were a major tourist attraction. “Some countries have gone for underground structures. Any long-term measure would depend on the recommendations to be made by the National Institute of Ocean Technology and the Central Water and Power Research Station, Mr. Krishna Babu said.
