Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) have resolved to promote green energy and maximise energy efficiency by co-operating with one nother and adopting best practices and technology transfer.
The resolution was made here on Tuesday on the second and concluding day of the international conference of the working group on energy efficiency of BRICS.
Delegates from all member countries participated in the meeting.
In a joint statement, the member countries committed themselves to pursuing cooperation in the fields of energy saving and energy efficiency through joint research, technology transfer, conferences, lectures and seminars.
Additional Secretary in the Union Ministry of Power B.P. Pandey said notes were exchanged on the experiences of the member countries in promoting energy efficiency in the fields of agriculture, industry and in civic bodies by promoting LED lighting. He said that the energy saving initiatives taken up by the Andhra Pradesh Government such as LED lighting and energy-efficient agri pumps also came in for special attention during the meeting.

The working group studied the LED streetlight project in Visakhapatnam and suggested that the BRICS member countries explore the possibility of replicating the model.
To a question on tapping solar energy, Mr. Pandey said that solar power had now become affordable to the common man as the unit rate could be brought down to roughly Rs. 5 and, therefore, the usage of solar power would increase substantially in the country.
“In fact, by 2030, it is our target to have 40 per cent of the installed power capacity in the country to come from green and renewable sources,” he added.
Paula Rassi (Brazil), Olga Yudina (Russia), Shancheng Wang (China) and Xolile Mabusela (South Africa) narrated the experiences and best practices implemented in their respective countries.
