June 06, 2014 08:05 pm | Updated October 24, 2016 08:11 pm IST - VIZIANAGARAM:

Expressing concern over uneven ratio between male and female population in some of the mandals, Collector Kantilal Dande on Friday ordered surprise checks on scanning centres in the district.

At the multi-member appropriate authority committee meeting on strict implementation of Pre-Conception and Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act on Friday, Mr. Kantilal Dande said that the average population ratio of 1000: 960 was depleting in eight mandals -- Jiyyammavalasa (1000 : 942), Garugubilli (928), Parvathipuram (rural) (958) and Parvathipuram (urban) (948), Bobbili (urban) (886), Garividi (904), Merakamudidam (956), Kothavalasa (932), and Bhogapuram (951).

Apart from scanning centres at District Headquarters Hospital, Gosha Hospital, Parvathipuram Area Hospital, and S. Kota Government Hospital, there are 49 more registered centres in the district. The Collector said that permission was required for starting new scanning centre or for renewal of the old ones.

Awareness drive

While the six members of the authority committee will monitor functioning of the scanning centres, Aasha and ICDS workers with the assistance of voluntary bodies would create awareness among people on PCPNDT Act. The medical officers would provide feedback after checking scanning centres, he said. District Medical and Health Officer U. Swarajya Lakshmi, Additional DM & HO C. Padmaja and District Immunization Officer Kishore Kumar were present.
