The Chirala police had to face the wrath of the residents of Ekalavya Colony near NAD Junction on Friday when they came to make an enquiry following the directions of the High Court.
The Chirala police arrested one P. Srinu in connection with a case in the city on January 20 and he was shifted to Chirala in Prakasam district. Two days after the arrest, Srinu’s wife P. Lakshmi, an advocate, went to the Chirala police station. The Chirala police told her that Srinu had fled from custody.
Sensing danger to Srinu, Lakshmi filed a habeas corpus petition in the High Court a few days ago and the court directed the Chirala police to produce Srinu in court. On Friday, five police personnel from Chirala went to Ekalavya Colony in search of Srinu and allegedly detained his relatives. Infuriated by this, some residents of the colony with the support of a few women’s organisations attacked three policemen near NAD Junction. When contacted, Inspector (Airport Zone) B. Tirumala Rao said that the complaints of both parties were registered and investigation was on.
